Small Stories, Character Sketches

“Amma, chai” ,he called out as he woke up. Biju rubbed his eyes, scratched his beard and searched for the small alarm clock. He hurried down the stairs and sheepishly picked up a cup of tea from the tray. Biju took a loud sip, paused and then frowned. He scanned the walls hurriedly and shouted “Amma! Where is the clock? I am getting late for work!” He carelessly scratched himself on his head and frowned. He ran back into his room, and then paced up and down the corridor. “Where are my clothes?”, he mumbled under his breath and closed the door with a loud thud.
He stepped out into the main road and stopped an auto rickshaw. “What? Don’t trick me with your crazy price, I usually take a bus from here”, he announced. “Biju Sir, I put meter on, get in”, the rickshaw driver smiled to himself and quickly pulled the lever and drove away. Biju started a clumsy trot, and then stopped. He hurriedly took out a mobile phone, put it to his ear and frowned, he looked around twice and dropped his gaze to the floor.
